| Excellent player, great audio options |
While I wish the player had analog audio outputs for my 7.1 compatible non-HDMI receiver, I am most pleased with the available audio options on this player given it was under $200. While providing the standard PCM and bitstream output options, I struggled to understand how I would benefit from either of these using the optical output from the player to my receiver. Enter the bitstream re-encode option, which re-encodes the PCM Dolby TrueHD stream into DTS bitstream. It works perfectly with my current 6.1 setup and the audio is crisp and dynamic (In case you are wondering, I use a Pioneer VSX-812 receiver and Bose 201 and 161 speakers). For those of you who are worried that you won't be able to take advantage of the lossless audio with your current setup, take a serious look at this player. It will help you bridge the gap between now and when you eventually upgrade to an HDMI receiver. The audio is notably better than even the DTS streams from standard DVDs. Make sure you set the player to Dynamic Compression OFF as it is enabled by default and significantly reduces the quality of the audio.
Video quality through HDMI as well as Component is excellent with few artifacts on playback. Load times are relatively quick as is menu navigation. The BD Live (Profile 2.0) firmware update is out, and it is only a matter of time before the DTS-HD Master Audio firmware update comes out as well. I can't recommend this player enough, as it is an excellent player for a very reasonable price. |

| Not bad |
| Works great and load times are fast if it's not hooked up to the net. I don't care much for the extra's. |

| Doesn't work with any of my DVDs - did I get a return???? |
I purchased the Samsung BD-P1500 blu-ray player after reading all the great comments on Amazon, and was happy to receive it yesterday while I was at work. When I opened the box at 8:30 PM (when I got home), and I noticed that part of the blu-ray box had information torn off, as if someone had removed some type of labeling from the box. I opened the box, and the unit looked fine, so I connected the blu-ray player to my Samsung 32" HD 1080p LCD TV (Model #LN32A550)with an HDMI cable, and put in a regular DVD since I hadn't yet received the blu-ray DVDs I purchased at the same time from Amazon. Unfortunately, the player wouldn't recognize the DVD or any of the other 10 DVDs I put into it!!! I contacted Samsung customer support this morning, and was told to press the fast-forward button for 5 seconds until the unit was reset. I eagerly tried the "reset" solution, and lo and behold....nothing changed! The unit still says "no disk", and is apparently not able to read any of the DVDs. I'm really disappointed as I was hoping to see great video with blu-ray. I'm wondering if I received someone's return, as I mentioned the box looked as if labels were removed by someone. I am sending this back, since I own so many regular DVDs, I'll purchase a blu-ray that actually works with both. What a waste of my time & money.
UPDATE: I received my blu-ray dvds the next day and they would not work either!!!! I really believe that I received someone's return. Amazon should make sure that any item returned to them actually works. My box was slightly damaged and missing writing on the box. I thought that the condition of the box was somewhat suspicious, but to have spent money on a blu-ray player and blu-ray discs only to find out that nothing works is a bummer. This faulty player is going back - I'll replace it with a PS3 that works!!! Sham on Amazon (or the vendor) that knew there was something wrong and sold it anyway. |
